I happened to go through my external harddisk, and saw my basilisk folder in it. Realising that I never got around to finish watching it, i spent a good 3 hours of my life absorbing animated characters in various positions. These 6 eps were over before I knew it, with a decent ending too, albeit slightly predictable.
Shorts synopsis:
Its set in 1614 AD, where two warring ninja clans, each supporting a son of Hidetada Tokugawa as the next shogun, send ten representatives each to fight to the death for the possession of a scroll. The prize: the annihilation of the other and the promise of having the staunch support of the Tokugawa government for the winning ninja clan for the next thousand years.
And as most stories go, romance was an integral bit of the plot, where the "leaders" of both sides were actually supposed to marry each other in a proposed bid to end the 4 centuries worth of hate and bloodshed between both clans. Sadly, just as they were about to begin mutual discussions on such a course of action, the shoguns decided to be sadistic and dissolve the binding peace covenant which has binded them for centuries.
So our poor lovebirds are stuck in the midst of heated ninja warfare, with betrayals, deceit, and unscruplous lowblows flying in all directions. AND they ended off with the girl having a faceoff with the guy, where she kills herself in order let the guy live on. And the guy writes on the scroll that the Iga Clan (on the girl's side) had won, before carrying her body into a river and killing himself.
Cheesy, no?
But these guys were ninja, and throughout the whole anime they HATED each other to the core. The epilogue was the stirring part though, where the judge says that for all they have done, for all the unneccessary bloodshed...
